Rothko Meditations

This piece is the result of my reflections on Mark Rothko's paintings currently on display in the Tate Modern. The display is set in a darkened room within the Tate, producing an intense and intimate experience.

I visited the Tate in March with a binaural microphone and a minidisc recorder, and sat contemplating the paintings. I tried to capture the experience and the environment by recording the sounds around me. The recordings were then processed (twisted, warped, granularised) to encode my own ideas about the paintings and the experience as a whole.

"Perceived, as the artist intended, in reduced light and in a compact space, the subtlety of the layered surfaces slowly emerges, revealing their solemn and meditative character." - tate.org.uk
